Budget high-street retailer Poundworld has announced plans to sell cut-price alcoholic drinks.

Poundworld’s decision to add cheap alcohol to its product portfolio comes after town chiefs outlined plans to ban the sale of cheap alcohol across the country.

The news is guaranteed to fuel fears about the rise of binge drinking on boozy Britain’s streets and the strain it is putting on NHS resources.

Research shows that there were over one million hospital admissions for alcohol-related incidents in England last year.

Poundworld, which has 80 stores in the UK, will roll out cut-price alcohol in the next months, along with a range of other products.

This will include canned goods, pasta sauces, eggs and bread in addition to chilled products like cheese, sausages and bacon.

Poundworld will be offering a limited selection of alcohol including cans of beer and cider for under £1 each.

In this time of austerity, budget retailers like Poundworld, 99p Stores and Poundland, are enjoying upward sales. This is reflected in Poundworld’s aggressive growth strategy.
