Yum! Brands has big plans to capture the African markets for the growth of its KFC brand. Yum! Is hoping to double the number of KFC outlets in Africa to1,200 by 2014 with an objective to increase its revenue in Africa to $2 billion.
After launching its first-ever outlet four decades back, in 1971, Yum! has branched out to other African countries like Nigeria, Zambia, Ghana, Namibia and Mozambique.
David Novak, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Yum! Brands said, "Africa wasn't even on our radar screen 10 years ago, but now we see it exploding with opportunity." However, Novak noted there were many operational difficulties such as import restrictions, product quality and bureaucracy that would challenge expansion efforts.
Is KFC offering any finger-liking menu to the Africans?
The menu will be similar to what the KFC outlets offer to the developed markets. There will be chicken drumsticks, chicken wings and fewer boneless products served in the menu to suit the local taste buds.
Since KFC is aiming to target richer Africans this time, it is also planning to attract lower income groups with value offerings. "The KFC brand is highly aspirational in Africa. People will save up to buy the USD3 meal, even if only once every three months,” said Keith Waren, Managing Director of Yum! Restaurants International.
