An increasing number of pop-up stores have emerged in the Connecticut landscape this Halloween boosting retail and helping seasonal entrepreneurs earn profits.
Business entrepreneurs are opening temporary retail facilities in local areas called pop-up stores by hiring local people for a month or so. They are paying rent to local building owners as well as taxes to municipality's grand list for as long as they are in operation. Halloween costume shops as pop-up stores are becoming a rage here. Five Halloween City stores have opened in the state including Stratford, Derby and Orange. These spots have helped to augment retail business and are welcomed by town officials.
"I guess they won't be around for long but at least they're here. If they can hire some local high school-age kids or residents, that's good, even if it's temporarily. Any kind of business opening is a boost to the town," said Mary Dean, executive director of the Stratford Chamber of Commerce.
Dave Kopjanski, building official and zoning enforcement officer for Derby added that: "Vacant commercial space is often used for seasonal businesses that often time turn into permanent businesses; and if it turns into a permanent business, that'll be very beneficial to the town"
More and more retail spaces are cropping up in several areas. These are mostly filled with costumes and accessories. Halloween Scene at 7 Backus Avenue in Danbury is a perfect example. It has 75,000 square feet of retail space filled with Halloween goodies. Superheroes as always are very popular this season: creatures from Avatar and Star Wars top the list. Hundreds of different costumes, wigs, make-up along with items for infants and pets are also up for grabs!
