Metro, one of the largest grocery retailers in Canada mentioned that its loyalty scheme called ‘Metro-et-Moi’ with the partner dunnhumby has fetched the retailer more than 80,000 shoppers in Quebec.

The ‘Metro-et-Moi’ skill was launched in September and has aided Metro in achieving its sales target.

“The scheme affects the assortment we carry, the price we sell for, the promotions we make, the personal offers we can target. That's the kind of stuff we need to compete in this environment with all the discount stores out there. Not to name the big elephant in the room, but Walmart is a big player," said Metro CEO Eric La Fleche in an interview given to Montreal Gazette publication.

“The loyalty scheme - which is run in partnership with dunnhumby - has helped the company exceed its targets on key measures such as enrolment, percentage of sales on the card and basket size,” added Fleche.

As reported by Montreal Gazette, La Fleche also mentioned that Metro is not very immune to the economic environment and had a tough time in getting consumers back. The loyalty program helped Metro in driving a bigger number of consumers as the program underlined the improvements Metro needs to do while learning the shopper insights.

"We were able to grow sales and have a clearer, simpler offer for the customer, with fewer assortments on the shelf. So we're saving on the cost side ... and we're growing sales and margins. In the dairy case, we shrank a lot of categories like margarine and increased the yogurt category. You can really measure your gestures and do a lot of trial and error to improve the store,” admits La Fleche.
