Ever since news first surfaced about the release of Nintendo’s 3DS and the iPad 2, consumers have been counting down the days to their release.

However, when the Nintendo 3DS and Apple’s iPad 2 finally launched last week, how were they received by consumers? Do their sales reflect the initial hype surrounding the gadgets? Retail Digital finds out.

Nintendo 3DS
Having sold over 144,059 million units worldwide, the Nintendo DS is the best selling hand-held game console to date and the second best selling video games console overall behind the PlayStation 2. Will the Nintendo 3DS follow in the steps of its predecessor?

If its sales this week are anything to go by then no. However, given its large casual audience, Nintendo’s games and hardware, always tends to sell better a few weeks after release.

Despite strong pre-orders, reports suggest that 3DS sales have been lower than Nintendo predicted, with the hand-held gaming console receiving a rather underwhelming reception in the UK.

The 3DS has failed to have much of an impact on this week’s games charts, with Sony still dominating the software sales.

Super Street Fighter IV: 3D edition managed a measly 6th place on the individual formats chart despite being the 3DS' best performing title.

Apple iPad 2
Upon its release in April 2010, Apple sold 3 million iPads in the first 80 days alone with total sales reaching over 15 million to date. How did the iPad 2 fare in its first week of release?

Following its international launch on Friday, it looks like the only place you will be able to purchase an iPad 2 is eBay, if you don’t mind paying over the odds for it that is.

Argos, the largest non-Apple store to sell the device in the UK, has confirmed that its 750 outlets in the UK and Ireland have run out of stock and for other retailers stocking the device around the world, it is the same story.

Demand for Apple's second-generation tablet computer was always expected to outstrip supply, but not many anticipated reserves to completely run dry in its first weekend of release.

“Demand for the next generation iPad 2 has been amazing. We are working hard to get iPad 2 into the hands of every customer who wants one as quickly as possible," Apple said in a statement.
