The group, which currently runs 382 stores and employs around 117,000 people, said the jobs would be in a variety of positions, such as its fresh food "Market Street" counters which include butchery, fishmongery and bakery.

It will also train 18,000 employees in the first year of a new scheme, it added in a statement.

Morrison said last month it had agreed to buy 38 stores from the mutually-owned Co-operative Group for 223 million pounds.

It is due to issue a Christmas trading update on January 22.
