Hundreds of angry customers are threatening to boycott Tesco Bank after a system error left them unable to access their bank accounts.

The technical glitch followed an attempt by Tesco to move 850,000 customer savings accounts and loans to a new computer system over the weekend.

The system update crashed the online banking service, leaving many customers struggling to pay for bills and debts.

Tesco Bank, the UK’s sixth largest bank, offers full banking services from loans and personal savings to credit cards.

The company has been heavily criticised for the blunder and how it has handled the situation.

Customers have reportedly wasted hours on hold after contacting Tesco’s call centre, which has been overwhelmed by complaints.

In a statement on its website, the bank apologised unreservedly for the problem and acknowledged the increased call volumes.

“The problem has led to an increase in call volumes to our call centre and we have not been able to answer calls as quickly as you would expect, or we would like,” said Tesco.

Tesco Bank has assured customers that it has fixed the problems that caused the system to crash.

However, reports suggest that Tesco Bank is continuing to experience technical difficulties with many customers still locked out of their accounts.

Tesco has promised to refund customers that can prove they have lost money as a result of the blunder.
