Activision will launch an online service, called Call of Duty Elite, to let fans elevate their experience with the popular first-person shooter games.

Activision has enjoyed unprecedented success with its Call of Duty franchise.  

Its latest title Call of Duty: Black Ops has sold over 22 million copies worldwide since its launch in November.

Activision believes its new online service is a response to the rise of social networking.

Call of Duty Elite, which has been created by a specially created game studio called Beachhead, will be accessible from all game console platforms including Xbox and PS3, computers and smartphones.

The service will also be available on Apple’s iPad 2.

The Elite service will allow COD fans to track their career in Call of Duty: Black Ops, the upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and future Call of Duty games.

It will be a place for COD fans to come together and form groups, compete by skill level and interest, share statistics and create video clips of their favourite Call of Duty moments.

With the video game industry worth more than Hollywood, gaming today is serious business. However, like books and music, physical sales are in gradual decline with more people than ever playing games online and on mobile devices.

Activision believes the future of video games lies in digital content. This includes everything from downloadable chapters, or map packs, in Call of Duty to monthly subscriptions like Xbox Live and games on Facebook and Smartphones.  

"Traditionally in gaming you would focus on graphical innovation or you would focus on gameplay mechanic innovation,” said Jamie Berger, Vice President of Digital at Activision.

“Those are still important, but I would argue that connected innovation and social innovation is going to actually be, in today's world, equally if not more important to the success of a game," he added.

Currently, more than 30 million people play Call of Duty online so there is certainly a gap in the market for the Elite service. However, will it be a hit with fans? Only time will tell when the service officially launches in November.  

Activision has released no details of pricing for its Elite service as yet.

However, the next Call of Duty instalment will feature a special Elite package, which will include the standard Modern Warfare 3 game, free access to any downloadable content and the premium online features.
