German sportswear manufacturer Puma is looking to tap into the growing consumer trend of eco-friendly fashion with a new line of compostable trainers and t-shirts.

The eco-friendly clothing is part of the company’s five-year sustainability strategy, which has been fundamental in bringing the flagging brand back to life.

"We are confident that in the near future we will be able to bring the first shoes, t-shirts and bags, that are either compostable or recyclable, to the market," Puma boss Franz Koch told German business magazine Wirtschaftswoche.

Puma is working with partners to develop products on the principle of the “cradle-to-cradle” design.

“It follows two circuits, the technical and the biological: I can use old shoes to make new ones or something completely different, such as car tyres,” continued Koch.

Last year the company unveiled its Clever Little Bag, a reusable bag made from 65 percent less paper than traditional shoe boxes with a reduced water, energy and diesel consumption.

This was the first in a string of green commitments honoured by the sportswear giant. Other initiatives included its environmental profit-and-loss statement, green packaging plans and commitment to zero toxic pollution by 2020.
