Marilyn Monroe’s iconic ivory dress has been sold to a private bidder at auction for $4.3 million.
The dress, which was expected to sell for $2 million, was made famous in the 1955 film The Seven Year Itch.
The scene where Hollywood legend Monroe stands on a subway and clutches at her dress as a well- timed gust of wind causes it to billow up and around her legs is the most famous film moment of its time.

Marilyn Monroe’s pleated frock stole the show at an auction for Hollywood memorabilia from actress Debbie Reynolds’ personal collection.
Reynolds acquired the dress along with Monroe’s entire wardrobe in 1971 when it was sold by 20th Century Fox.
Marilyn Monroe’s red-sequin dress from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes sold for $1.2 million while her skimpy costume from River of No Return fetched over $500,000.
The dresses were sold alongside a further 3,500 items from Reynold’s collection, which included props from Hollywood classics like Gone With the Wind, My Fair Lady, Casablanca and Ben-Hur.
A blue cotton dress worn by Judy Garland for the first two weeks of filming as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz sold for a further $910,000. This was more than ten times its estimated price.
"I wanted to build a museum for the public, which I was never able to raise the money for. That's why you are seeing this auction,” said Reynolds.
"I think it's sad, but I think it's the only way it can happen. It's the only way I can save it. I can't maintain it any-more."
